The hair or cremated ashes are first analysed to determine whether they contain enough carbon to be turned into a diamond. The carbon content of ashes differs from case to case, and the total contained carbon may or may not be enough for LONITÉ’s diamond creation process. It is highly suggested that clients provide additional hair samples from the family as a supplement/backup plan.

Planetary Nano-Crystallisation

Impurity remover is applied in a special solvent to remove unstable chemicals. The material (ashes or hair) is then milled and stirred into a nano powder in a special chemical gas environment. The impurity remover attaches to impurities, which are then isolated from the materials by a high-speed centrifuge. Furthermore, special treatment and techniques are implemented so the remaining carbon is adequately preserved while other elements extracted are reduced to a fractional minimum.

Heated Vacuum Purification

The milled, purified material is heated to extreme temperatures to eliminate volatile impurities. At this step oxygen is removed and inert, protective and reducing gases are injected to protect the ashes or hair from oxidation. Double handling is applied for chemical extraction. In some cases, high voltages may be applied in an energised airtight container to melt and evaporate chemicals, further purifying the solid carbon.

Wet Chemical Carbon Purification

The carbon from hair or ashes is then placed in a safe and resistant cabinet, a wet chemical environment so as to increase purity by removing heavy metals. The program-controlled process of specific temperatures, stirring speeds, and the addition of chemical reagents ensures the carbon quality. At the end of this final purification step, the carbon purity reaches as high as 99.99% (4N Purity). If the purity levels have not reached 99.99% by this stage, additional customised purification steps are implemented to remove the specific remaining impurities.

The purified, extracted carbon is converted into flake graphite in form of a cylinder. Before being placed into the diamond synthesis machine, the cylinder is carefully wrapped in protective and corbelled materials. This prepares it for the final technical steps that require pressure and temperature measurement, insulation and protection. The transformation takes several days to several months depending on the size and color of the memorial diamond to be created.

Unlike mined diamonds, rough memorial or cremation diamonds are usually mixed with graphite and other materials, paticuliarly on the surface. The rough diamond is carefully polished by experts who deal solely with grown diamonds. A rough un-cut memorial diamond can be provided on request for as long as there is no attempt to cut it after it has been delivered because inexperienced diamond cutters are very likely to break the diamond.

I. Carbon Purification.

Cremated remains are purified for 5,000 minutes, over 3 days, to achieve 99.99% carbon, (4N or “4 Nines” purity).

Purification takes approximately 5,000 minutes, over 83 hours, for each memorial diamond ordered.

Water is purified using a ultrapure water system to 18.2 MΩ.cm (1,250 times more pure than drinking water). All chemical containers are cleaned with the ultrapure water to avoid introducing external contaminants to the cremated ashes.

II. Diamond Crystallisation.

The purified carbon is the foundation for cremation diamond crystallisation. Air, along with other atoms such as H₂O (water) and O₂ (Oxygen) are removed to ensure that the carbon is very pure and dense.

A typical Purely Colourless diamond grows slowly and steadily at the extremely slow speed of 0.5-1.0 mg/hour. Slow crystallization results to fewer flaws and better structure in the cremation diamond. This means a 1 carat diamond can take 750 hours, almost a full month to grow.
